How to Read a Kundli for Beginners

September 02, 2026

Start with three anchors: the lagna, the Moon sign, and where each planet sits in a house. Almost every other detail in a kundli builds on those three, so a beginner who can find them has already done the hardest part.

What is the first thing to look at in a kundli?

The lagna, also called the ascendant, which is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth. It sits in the first house and sets the frame for the entire chart: every other house is counted outward from it. This is why birth time matters so much in Vedic astrology. The lagna can change every two hours, and a wrong time can shift the whole chart's structure.

Why does the Moon sign matter as much as the Sun sign?

Because Vedic astrology reads temperament and the state of mind through the Moon, called the rashi, rather than through the Sun. If you have only ever followed Western horoscopes, this is usually the biggest adjustment: your Vedic Moon sign will often feel like a more familiar description of your everyday mood and reactions than your Sun sign does.

What do the 12 houses represent?

Each house covers a different area of life, and a planet's effect depends heavily on which house it occupies.

  • 1st house - self, body, general disposition
  • 2nd house - money, family, speech
  • 3rd house - courage, siblings, short journeys
  • 4th house - home, mother, inner peace
  • 5th house - children, creativity, intellect
  • 6th house - health, debts, daily obstacles
  • 7th house - marriage and partnerships
  • 8th house - transformation, longevity, sudden change
  • 9th house - fortune, father, higher learning
  • 10th house - career and public standing
  • 11th house - gains, income, social circle
  • 12th house - loss, isolation, foreign connections

Reading a kundli is largely a matter of asking which houses a planet sits in or rules, and layering that on top of the sign it occupies.

How do planets change what a house means?

A house tells you the area of life. The planet sitting in it tells you the flavor. Jupiter in the 7th house speaks about partnership differently than Saturn does in the same house. This is also why two people can share a house placement and still have noticeably different lives: the sign, the ruling planet, and any aspects from other planets all shift the reading.

What is the difference between a sign and a house?

A sign is fixed to the zodiac and never moves. A house is fixed to the person, built from their exact birth time and place. Two people born the same day in different cities, or a few hours apart, can have the same planetary signs but a completely different house layout. This is the part beginners most often confuse, and it is also why an online sign-only description can never substitute for an actual chart.

Do I need to know Sanskrit terms to read my own kundli?

No. The terms are useful shorthand once they are familiar, but the underlying logic (which house, which planet, which sign) is the same whether you call it lagna or ascendant, rashi or Moon sign. Most people pick up the vocabulary naturally after seeing it applied to their own chart a few times.

What is the safest way to start, if this is my first time?

Locate your lagna and Moon sign first, since those two anchor everything else. Then look at where each planet sits in a house, one at a time, rather than trying to read the whole chart at once. A kundli is a map with many layers, and beginners get the most out of it by learning the layers in order instead of all together.

If your birth time is uncertain, or you would rather have someone walk through the layers with you directly, that is exactly what a reading is for.
