The main difference is the starting point of the zodiac. Vedic astrology measures signs against the fixed stars, and Western astrology measures them against the spring equinox. Those two reference points have drifted apart over the centuries, so the same birth moment can be given a different sign in each system. Almost everything else that people notice follows from that one choice.
Why is my sign different in a Vedic chart?
Because the two systems are measuring from different places, not because one has made an error. If your Western Sun sign is near the beginning of a sign, a Vedic chart will often place it in the sign before. If it sits in the middle, it may not move at all. This is the single most common surprise for someone who has read Western horoscopes for years and then sees a kundli for the first time.
Neither reading is a mistake. They are two systems with different conventions, in the same way that two calendars can give different names to the same day.
Sun sign or Moon sign?
Western astrology usually leads with the Sun sign. Vedic astrology leans on the Moon sign, called the rashi, and on the rising sign, the lagna.
In practice that changes what a reading feels like. A Western reading built on the Sun tends to speak about identity and purpose. A Vedic reading built on the Moon tends to speak about the mind, temperament and emotional weather. When people say a kundli reading felt more personal, this is often what they are responding to.
What does Vedic astrology have that Western does not?
Three things come up most often.
Nakshatras. Vedic astrology divides the zodiac a second time, into twenty seven lunar mansions. Your Moon falls into one of them, and it adds a layer of detail that signs alone do not carry.
Dashas. These are planetary periods that run in sequence across a lifetime. They are the main reason a Vedic astrologer will talk about timing at all, and they are why a chart can suggest that a particular stretch of years is heavier or lighter than the one before it.
Remedies. Vedic practice includes upay, the practical steps a person can take. Western astrology is generally interpretive rather than prescriptive.
Which one is more accurate?
That question cannot be settled by comparing the two systems to each other, and anyone who answers it confidently is selling something. They ask different questions and are built on different assumptions. A better question is which one answers what you actually came to ask.
If you want to understand your temperament and how you meet the world, either can help. If you want to ask when something is likely to move, or what to do about a situation that has been stuck, the Vedic system was built for that and has a specific method for it.
Does one contradict the other?
Less often than it looks. A Western reading and a Vedic reading of the same person will usually agree on the broad shape of a life and disagree on the labels. If they contradict each other outright on something that matters, that is worth asking the astrologer about directly rather than choosing whichever answer you preferred.
What should I expect from a Vedic reading?
Your chart is drawn from your date, exact time and place of birth. The time matters more here than in most Western readings, because the lagna changes roughly every two hours. If your birth time is uncertain, say so at the start. It does not make a reading impossible, but it changes which parts of it can be relied on.
A good reading tells you what the chart shows and what it does not. A chart is a map, not a sentence.
