What Do the 12 Houses Mean in a Birth Chart?

September 11, 2026

Each of the 12 houses (bhavas) in a Vedic birth chart represents a fixed area of life, starting from the 1st house (self, body, personality) and moving around to the 12th (losses, foreign travel, letting go), with the houses in between covering money, family, communication, home, romance, health, partnership, transformation, luck, career, and gains in that order.

Why 12 houses, and what decides which is which

The chart is divided into 12 equal segments, one per zodiac sign, starting from the Lagna, or Ascendant: the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of birth. The Lagna becomes the 1st house, and the other 11 follow in order around the chart. Because the Lagna depends on birth time, two people born on the same day in the same city can have completely different house placements for every planet.

North Indian charts draw this differently from South Indian ones, and it is worth knowing if you have seen both online and found them confusing. In the North Indian diamond-shaped chart, the house POSITIONS on the page are fixed (1st house is always the top diamond), and the zodiac SIGNS move depending on the Lagna. In the South Indian square chart, it is the opposite: the SIGNS are fixed to their boxes, and the house numbers move around depending on which sign is the Lagna. Same information, different layout convention. Astro Richa reads in the North Indian style.

The 12 houses, one line each

1st house: self, body, personality, general health and vitality. 2nd house: money, family, speech, food, values. 3rd house: courage, siblings, short journeys, communication, effort. 4th house: home, mother, property, emotional foundation, vehicles. 5th house: children, romance, education, creativity, intelligence. 6th house: health, debts, disputes, daily work, obstacles. 7th house: marriage, business partnership, the "other" in any one-to-one relationship. 8th house: transformation, longevity, inheritance, hidden matters, sudden events. 9th house: luck, higher learning, father, dharma, long journeys. 10th house: career, public standing, authority, life direction. 11th house: gains, income, friendships, hopes fulfilled. 12th house: losses, expenses, foreign travel, isolation, spiritual release.

Which house should I look at for a specific question?

For marriage timing, the 7th house and its ruling planet matter most, along with the planets influencing it. For career, the 10th house is the anchor, but the 6th (daily work) and 2nd (income) fill in the rest of the picture. For finances broadly, the 2nd house covers savings and family wealth while the 11th covers active income and gains. None of these are read alone; a full reading looks at the house, its ruling planet's placement, and any other planets sitting in or aspecting it.

Is one house more important than the rest?

No single house decides a life on its own. The 1st (self), 7th (relationships), and 10th (career) are called the angular or "kendra" houses and are traditionally read as the four pillars of stability, but a strong 1st house does not outweigh a difficult 7th, and vice versa. A kundli is read as a set of relationships between houses, not a ranking.

Do all 12 houses matter equally in every chart?

They matter differently for different questions, which is exactly why "read your own chart" is harder than reading a generic list like this one. This page tells you what each house governs in principle; it cannot tell you what a specific house looks like in your own chart, because that depends on which sign sits there, which planets occupy it, and how those planets are placed elsewhere.
