Which House and Planet Control Wealth in Vedic Astrology?

In Vedic astrology, wealth is read primarily from two houses, the 2nd and the 11th, with Jupiter treated as the dhana-karaka, the planet that signifies wealth itself.

What does the 2nd house actually represent?

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) governs accumulated wealth: savings, family resources, movable assets, and speech, which is why it also touches how someone earns through what they say or negotiate. A well-placed 2nd house lord, or a benefic sitting in the 2nd house itself, is read as support for steady accumulation rather than a guarantee of a specific sum. The 2nd house is about what builds up and stays, not what moves through.

What does the 11th house add that the 2nd house does not?

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, and money as it arrives, along with the circle of friends, networks, and elder siblings that often bring opportunity with them. Where the 2nd house is the store, the 11th is the stream feeding it. A chart can show a strong 11th house with active income and still need a healthy 2nd house lord for that income to convert into lasting savings, which is why the two houses are read together rather than as substitutes for each other.

Why is Jupiter called the dhana-karaka?

Jupiter is the natural signifier (karaka) of wealth, expansion, and abundance across the whole chart, independent of which house it happens to occupy in a specific birth chart. A Jupiter that is strong by sign, well placed, or linked to either the 2nd or 11th house (by occupation, aspect, or rulership) is read as a genuine wealth factor. This is also why Jupiter's own dasha periods are watched closely for financial movement, whether or not the person's Lagna or Moon sign would suggest it on a quick glance.

What is a Dhana Yoga, and how do you spot one?

A Dhana Yoga is a specific planetary combination, not a vague sense that "wealth planets are present." The classical pattern is a benefic, especially Jupiter, placed in or connected to the 2nd or 11th house, or a parivartana (mutual exchange) between the lords of the 2nd and 11th houses. Spotting one means checking the actual house placements and lordships in a real chart, not matching a Sun sign description to a wealth checklist, which is the shortcut most generic online content takes.

Does this look different depending on which chart style you are reading?

It can look different on the page without the underlying rule changing. Astro Richa reads in the North Indian diamond-chart style, where the house positions are fixed on the page (the 2nd house is always the same diamond, the 11th house is always the same diamond) and the zodiac signs rotate into those positions depending on the Lagna. A South Indian square chart does the opposite: the signs are fixed to their boxes and the house numbers rotate instead. If a wealth explainer you have seen elsewhere drew the 2nd and 11th houses in a different-looking diagram, this is almost always why, not a disagreement about which houses matter.

Is a strong 2nd or 11th house enough on its own to call a chart wealthy?

Not reliably, on its own. The 2nd and 11th houses, and Jupiter's condition, are the starting point, but a full reading also checks the lords of those houses, any afflictions from malefics, and the relevant planetary periods (dashas) before saying much about timing or scale. Reading this correctly in a specific birth chart, rather than from general house meanings, is exactly where a real one-to-one consultation differs from a generic wealth-astrology article.
